Speedheat franchises do not sell the notoriously expensive underfloor heating, but they only sell and install 'floor surface heating'. The running efficiency of these products are many times better than underfloor heating. This can be explained as follows:

 

Conventional underfloor heating wasted a lot of energy because the heating elements were buried deep inside the slab. With such a system the entire floor slab had to be heated up whilst minimal heat came off the floor to warm the room. This may work reasonably well when you want to heat your home the whole day and when the outside temperatures do not vary too much.

 

With the variation of day and night temperatures in South Africa as well as occupancy levels, however, the demand for heat changes during the day. This means that in order to run your heating system efficiently, the temperature of the floor and the amount of heat generated must change accordingly (on-demand heating).

 

A hot floor slab with it's enormous heat capacity cannot change it's temperature quickly, which means that a lot of heat energy is wasted. Speedheat realised this a long time ago and recognised the need to bring the heat source as close as possible to the floor surface and to decouple the floor surface heating from the slab itself.
